My Journey: A Story of Discovery and Purpose

In 1997, as a third-year student of Biology and Business, I was tasked with choosing a dissertation project that would count towards my final degree. I wasn’t interested in writing another dry academic paper—I wanted something practical, rooted in real life and reflective of my personal interests.

As a seasoned competitive swimmer, I had long been passionate about health, wellness and skincare—areas I felt were under-explored from a truly scientific perspective. What really caught my attention; however, was the stark contrast between the promises of well-known brands and the actual quality of the products they offered. It was troubling to see millions spent on glossy ads and celebrity endorsements, while the ingredients told a very different story.

Many skincare products relied heavily on cheap fillers such as mineral oil, silicones, and paraffin—substances that may create a temporary smooth feel but offer little real benefit to the skin. My research into the supplement industry revealed similar concerns.
